Opinion: Polis’ careless words disappoint. Colorado’s women expect better from our allies.

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:39:53 GMT

Words matter. Representation matters. And to the great disappointment of the Democratic Women’s Caucus of Colorado, our governor failed to demonstrate an understanding of that in a series of recent public comments and actions. While we know that Gov. Jared Polis is a thoughtful and compassionate man who cares about the people of Colorado, as our state’s highest elected leader, it is incumbent upon him to carefully choose words that reflect his understanding of the real issues those identifying as women, which comprise 49.2% of his constituents, face.Several recent incidents have given us pause. The first was at an event to celebrate the election of Mayor Yemi Mobolade in Colorado Springs. The governor recognized Focus on the Family for the good work they do in the community.Focus on the Family has actively worked to undermine progress on values our Caucus holds dear, including comprehensive reproductive health care and the rights of all people to express themselves as individuals and...

Opinion: Blocking the Uinta Basin Railway is another injustice to the Ute Indian Tribe

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:39:53 GMT

Colorado politicians have apparently forgotten about the state’s historical second-class treatment of Native Americans and are repeating many of the same mistakes today. As Chairman of the Ute Indian Tribe Business Committee, I am shocked and disappointed by the actions of Gov. Jared Polis, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, and other state lawmakers that reflect disregard and contempt toward our peoples’ ancestral ties to Colorado.Ute Indians occupied what is now the state of Colorado from time immemorial. Although the federal government forced us to relocate to eastern Utah in what we today call our Uintah and Ouray Reservation, Colorado remains our ancestral homeland.Once we were forcibly relocated to the arid Uinta Basin, energy mineral production has become the main source of livelihood for our people, who would otherwise struggle to put food on the table, access education, and provide shelter for our families. The Uinta Basin Railway Project would provide much-n...

Legal challenges to Biden's student loan plans have borrowers anxious

Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:39:53 GMT

(The Hill) - The Biden administration has found more of its student loan policies entangled in legal battles, raising anxiety for borrowers as repayments are set to start in the fall. The most recent challenges threaten student loan forgiveness for 800,000 borrowers and changes to the borrower defense student debt relief program that would make it easier for those defrauded by their colleges to receive forgiveness.Borrowers are having to navigate what the legal developments mean for their loans while also losing faith in receiving more help from the administration before they have to begin repaying their debts in October. President Joe Biden in the Oval Office of the White House is seen in this file photo from July 18, 2023. By Caelyn Pender | BloombergHigher interest rates and a new tax on luxury home sales in Los Angeles are weighing on even the celebrity real estate agents who show off their million-dollar listings on TV.Mauricio Umansky, chief executive officer of the Agency and star of the Netflix series Buying Beverly Hills, said his company’s transaction volume, though better than average, is down about 25%. The housing market, he said, “is in a recession.”Jason Oppenheim, president of the Oppenheim Group and star of two other Netflix programs, Selling Sunset and Selling the OC, also expects to sell fewer homes this year.“This is when agents get defined — in difficult times,” he said. The nation’s second-largest city, a perennial hot spot for real estate, is wrestling with higher interest rates that make homes less affordable and a new tax that went into effect in April. The city imposes a 4% levy on properties selling for over $5 million and 5.5% on those over $10 million, with the money going to...

Cadaver dogs are in Maui to help find the dead. Here’s how it works and why it’s difficult

By Zoe Sottile | CNNTwisted metal. The carcases of burned sedans. Charred shells of what once were homes, thriving businesses and cultural landmarks. As Maui officials continue searching through the wreckage for the many who are still missing after wildfires tore through the island, they have a new tool at hand: human remains detection dogs, often called cadaver dogs. The wildfires, whipped by strong winds from Hurricane Dora offshore, ravaged the once vibrant Hawaiian island, killing at least 93 people. Only two of the dead have been identified as of Saturday. The disaster is the deadliest US wildfire in over 100 years, according to research from the National Fire Protection Association. Officials have acknowledged the death toll is likely to increase and the true scale of the casualties is unclear. And spotty cell phone coverage has added to the confusion over missing friends and family.Cell signals are improving – some families have finally been able to reach their loved ones throu...

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 30 of her 42 points in the first half to help the New York Liberty beat the Indiana Fever 100-89 on Sunday and set a franchise record for wins in a season. New York (24-6) has won six games in a row and 10 of its last 11. Stewart, who scored 45 points in a 90-73 win over the Fever on May 21 and a 43-point performance against the Phoenix Mercury on July 5, became the first player in WNBA history to score at least 40 points three times in the same season. Stewart joins Diana Taurasi (4) and Maya Moore (3) as the only players to top the 40-point plateau three times in their career. Jonquel Jones had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Liberty, Betnijah Laney scored 12 and Sabrina Ionescu 10. Courtney Vandersloot scored just four points on 1-of-7 shooting but finished with 14 assists.
