And Mega Millions’ jackpot grew to an estimated $720 million after there was no winner Tuesday. But don’t plan on entering a new tax bracket anytime soon. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot — no matter the size — stand near 1 in 292.2 million. Chances of taking home Mega Millions’ top prize are even lower, at about 1 in 302.6 million.Because of the almost impossible chance of winning big, experts stress that you shouldn’t spend all your money on lottery tickets. If you choose to play, it’s important to be mindful of what you can afford — and maybe consider other plac...

A new office created by the Healey administration is intended to “bring experimentation” and “different ideas” to the state’s transportation department, which has come under scrutiny lately in the face of a litany of safety and service issues.Transportation Secretary Gina Fiandaca approached two employees on Boston’s civic innovation team to pitch the idea for the new Office of Possibility, within the Department of Transportation, according to new Chief of Possibilities Kristopher Carter.“Government works in sort of a probability mindset, right? Where you’re taking very little risk, you’re working with experts that are already known to you. So the theory here of a possibility government, is can we take slightly larger risks, knowing that not everything is going to work out? That failure is an outcome. But can we do that on a scale that is small enough where we learn, and we improve the thing until we get it right?” Carter s...
